Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 24, 2026
1. Introduction
paceai ("Pace," "we," "us," or "our") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our smart glasses, companion mobile application, website (paceai.dev), and related services (collectively, the "Services").
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide
- Account information: name, email address, and password when you create an account
- Profile preferences: reading speed targets, highlight colors, accessibility mode selections
- Waitlist information: email address submitted through our website
- Support requests: communications you send to us
2.2 Information Collected Automatically
- Reading session data: words per minute (WPM), session duration, pages read, reading frequency, and comprehension quiz scores
- Eye-tracking metrics: fixation duration, saccade patterns, regression frequency, and blink rate — processed entirely on-device and never transmitted in raw form
- Device data: glasses firmware version, mobile app version, device model, operating system
- Usage analytics: feature usage patterns, session timestamps, and performance metrics
2.3 Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not store the text content of books, documents, or any material you read
- We do not transmit raw camera images from the glasses to our servers
- We do not record or store raw eye-tracking video data
- OCR text processing happens entirely on-device; only anonymized metadata (word count, difficulty score) is synced
3. How We Use Your Information
- To provide, maintain, and improve the Services
- To personalize your reading experience through our adaptive AI models
- To generate reading analytics, summaries, and progress reports
- To communicate with you about updates, features, and support
- To conduct research and development to improve our AI models (using anonymized, aggregated data only)
- To comply with legal obligations
4. AI Model Training
Our adaptive speed engine and comprehension models improve over time using anonymized reading behavior data. Specifically:
- On-device models use federated learning — your model improves locally, and only gradient updates (not your data) are sent to our servers
- Aggregated, de-identified reading patterns may be used to improve our global AI models
- You can opt out of contributing to global model improvement in your account settings
- Individual reading content is never used for model training
5. Data Storage and Security
- All data is encrypted at rest (AES-256) and in transit (TLS 1.3)
- Reading session data is stored locally on your device first (SQLite) and synced to our cloud servers (AWS, US region) only with your permission
- Eye-tracking data is processed on-device and never leaves the glasses in raw form
- We maintain SOC 2 Type II compliance standards
- Access to personal data is restricted to authorized personnel on a need-to-know basis
6. Data Sharing
We do not sell your personal information. We may share data only in these circumstances:
- Service providers: cloud hosting (AWS), analytics (Plausible), and email services that process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements
- Education partners: if you use Pace through a school program, aggregated (not individual) reading progress may be shared with your institution, with your consent
- Legal requirements: when required by law, regulation, or legal process
- Business transfers: in connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with prior notice to you
7. Children's Privacy (COPPA)
Pace is not directed to children under 13. If Pace is used in a school setting with children under 13, we require verifiable parental consent and comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Schools acting as agents of parents may provide consent on their behalf in accordance with COPPA and FERPA.
8. Student Data (FERPA)
When Pace is used in educational settings, we comply with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Student reading data is treated as an education record. We act as a "school official" with a "legitimate educational interest" and do not use student data for advertising or non-educational purposes.
9. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your data ("right to be forgotten")
- Export your data in a portable format (CSV, JSON)
- Opt out of AI model training contributions
- Withdraw consent for data processing
To exercise these rights, contact us at privacy@paceai.dev. We respond to all requests within 30 days.
10. Data Retention
We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we delete all personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law. Anonymized, aggregated data that cannot be linked back to you may be retained indefinitely for research purposes.
11. International Data Transfers
Your data may be processed in the United States. If you are located outside the US, your information is transferred subject to appropriate safeguards, including Standard Contractual Clauses where required by GDPR.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by email or through the app. Continued use of the Services after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
